Talkback Tuesday : Is Prison, Hip Hop Rite of Passage ?

Is Prison: Hip Hop Rite of Passage ?

Was hip hop born out of frustration? Did it fight against oppression? In the early 80's, Hip-Hop exploded on the scene due to a devastated urban infrastructure. The urban infrastructure was decaying, the public schools system was failing, and crack cocaine was on the rise. It turns out, it was just in time to battle the neo conservative Reagan-Bush administration. Many of you might not know, but under the Reagan Presidency, the country's prison population increased significantly. Is this a coincidence, or was it an attack on Black self-determination?

Have you heard of the Iran-Contra scandal? Where the CIA was blamed for spreading crack cocaine in the inner cites. Which by the way, came on the scene after the hip hop nation threatened the powers to be by shinning light on superficial politicians, police brutality, the cruelty many blacks endured, and a racially divided America. Before that, there was no militancy or consciousness in music. Artists mainly talked about partying, good looking women, and having fun. Which makes one wonder, was this done
intentionally?

This allowed the politicians to blame poor black neighborhoods, as the root problem. This message is to young black rappers. You are being used to drug those who weren't already drugged by religion, public education, and materialism. President Regan, along with his successors, issued several laws and acts aimed to control, restrict and eliminate the things, which they help start.

Many cities issued Anti
Loitering Acts, and etc., but their main goal was to put us behind bars. Many blacks were jailed based on urban style of clothing, hairstyle, language, and etc. So is prison a rite of passage for
hip hoppers or is hip hop under attack by corrupt politicians who created laws based on urban culture? You be the judge!
